Another Guinness story, by James O'Fee
Here's another Guinness story, to add to the blogs this week about the Guinness family (seehere). It connects too with the current New Zealand theme on the blog.Dr Brian EastonDr Brian Eastonwas once my Economics tutor at Sussex University (40 years ago!), with whom I have kept in touch over the years. Brian returned to live in Wellington, capital of his native New Zealand. From 1977 to 2006 Brian wrote a fortnightly column for theNew Zealand Listener. The most recent of hisListenerarticle in the archives isSAVE AND WIN(April 2007). And the latest of his economic pieces on Brian's own website was posted just a few days ago,WRITING GLOBALISATION AND THE WEALTH OF NATIONS.Of course Brian remained in close touch with university circles. One of his friends,Brad Patterson, is Irish and was connected with the attempt to convene the first-ever academic conference on Irish emigration to New Zealand (possibly at the University of Wellington in 2002, but I stand open to correction). There was a problem - they money in order to run the conference properly, whose appointed date was approaching with speed. So Brian asked me by email whether I might have any ideas. All public companies have a budget, large or small, for community involvement, but one name leapt out at me. The name was 'Guinness', so appropriate for the Ireland/ New Zealand theme of the conference. One branch of the Guinness family established itself in NZ and Sir Arthur Guinness KCB (1846-1913) became Speaker of the NZ House of Representatives.DiageoBy then Guinness had merged with Distillers and changed the name of the Group toDIAGEO. I believe this comes from the Greek and means 'out of the earth'. The name's virtue is that it's spelt the same in all known languages. So on the Net I researched the Diageo outlets, came up with the main office, emailed back to Brian the address and phone number. One phone call from the Conference organiser and the deed was done!If I've misrepresented the sequence of events, perhaps Brian will correct me.
